Pentagrams
The
Pentagram, or five pointed star, is an enduring symbol that has been found
throughout history. According to the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician
Pythagoras, the five points of the star represent the five elements that make up
man: spirit, water, air, earth, and fire. In the Jewish Kabalistic
tradition, the pentagram represents the five upper sephiroth in the Tree of
Life, representing justice, mercy, wisdom, understanding, and transcendent
splendor. It also represents the relationship of man to God.
The pentagram has been important to most
cultures throughout history. It is also an important spiritual significance for
many people, particularly those practicing magic. The pentagram is best used
with the points up to assure that the intent is aligned with purity and light.
Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting, the
Vitruvian Man, is perhaps the best known depiction of the pentagram in modern
art. In the Vitruvian Man, the circle around the man’s body represents the
feminine symbol of protection. The feminine circle with a naked man represents
the balance between male and female. The man himself, with arms and legs
outstretched, creating a pentagram with the four limbs and the head.
